Happy
Spring!
With spring finally here to stay I thought it would
be a good time to talk about flea and tick season before we are in the
middle of it. As most of you know the leading flea and tick products out
there are chemically based products. The chemicals we are talking about are
pesticides, pesticides are poison. Poison to us and to our animals. Almost
all of the over the counter products are toxic to animals, this is
especially true for older pets or pets with compromised immune systems.
As responsible care takers of our animals we need to take the time to look
at what we are giving our pets for fleas and ticks. I have done some
research in this area and would like to pass on a few things I have found
that might be useful to you so you can make an informed decision about what
is right for your pet.
There was a wonderful article written for The Whole Dog Journal by Kathleen
Dudley in 2002. In the journal's article she discusses whether "Spot-On"
Flea Killers are safe or not. "Spot-On" meaning products like Frontline,
Advantage and BioSpot to name a few. She list risk factors and the adverse
affects these products have. Think about it, if you have to put gloves on
to administer the product what is it doing to my pet? Click on the link or
cut and paste it into your browser to view some facts you may not know.

We all need to take the
time to learn more about the caretaking we are doing with our companions. We
love them and say we would do anything for them. Now is a perfect time to do
just that. In light of the whole pet food debacle do we really think the
companies producing the products, the FDA or the EPA are giving us the full
and truthful facts? I recommend all pet owners to go on-line or read up on
the products we are currently using with our animals. Check the ingredients
of the products you have used in the past and how do they stack up to the
knowledge you now have after doing some research? The education you
receive may just save their lives this year!
The Seed Planters
That is the name I have given to people who help others awaken
to the fact that animals have the same basic needs as we do and can
exist on a spiritual plane as we do. Believe it or not there are still folks
out there that don't recognize this fact. Our animal companions are part of
our family and often times our only family. The more we
learn about our animal companions, whether it is about food, vaccinations,
exercise, or their need to be as individualistic as we are, all adds to the
collective consciousness of each being on the
planet. We all benefit. So take what you have learned and plant the seeds of
looking at animals in a different light with all that you can. |

impact on my life.
On June 23rd I will be raffling off either an Animal Communication Session
or a Healing Touch for Animals Session. Your choice. Either of these
sessions can be done wherever you are located. To enter the drawing please
visit my website
www.spiritpaws.com and go to the bottom of the home page. Enter
as often as you would like and tell all your friends to enter too! All
proceeds from the raffle will be donated to Lhasa Apso Rescue. On
behalf of the animals we thank you!
Food for Thought
If you are like me you are concerned about the
recent developments in regards to the foods we are feeding our animal
companions. Unfortunately many animals tragically died in order to bring the
situation to light on the whole commercial pet food issue. I recently
attended a talk given by Stacy Martin-Duffy, owner of Baron's K9 Country
Store in Bel Air, MD. As much as I thought I knew about the foods I was
giving my pets there was so much more I learned that night. Some of the
subjects talked about were Food allergies many animals have aquired due to
the foods they are being feed. Many grades of commercial foods contain corn
and wheat which can often times can
cause allergies. Animals with food allergies
can also suffer from depression, behavior problems, hyperactivity and
aggressive behavior. The first 5 ingredients listed are what the food
mainly consists of. A great book to use for more information on what really
goes into our pets foods is by Ann Martin called "Foods Pets Die For".
I recommend all pet owners read this book!
Next month we will talk about the benefits of a raw diet for cats and
dogs. Is it really good for them and will it cost more than what I am
feeding now?
